Recover Data from a Hard Drive
There are many different ways to lose data from your hard drive. The question is can you recover data from a hard drive once it is lost?
The users of personal computers, either at home or at work, have a common fear of losing that valuable data that is stored in their hard drives. This is not an unfounded fear at all. It may be mechanical failure or it may be human error, but hard drive failure is not uncommon and people are often devastated by the sudden loss of data. The feeling is not unlike watching your home burn to the ground. Is it possible to recover data from a hard drive?
There are some people who have deliberately deleted data from their hard drive and most of us have learned of the possibility of recovery via these stories. These people are covering up some illegal activity and feel that once they have purged the incriminating data from their hard drive, they are home free. Then, we hear, the hard drive is handed over to some technicians who magically restore the data and the criminal is busted. These stories give us the first inkling that data recovery is possible.
The bottom line is that it is possible to recover data from a hard drive. In fact, there are data recovery programs available that can allow you to do it yourself without the help of those white coated techs at the secret government lab. The process is not always easy and the cost of the recovery programs is usually very high. The reason the data has been lost or corrupted is going to be the key factor in what will be needed.
The deliberate erasing of data is usually the type of problem that might require a lab, some good technicians, and even a special “clean room” to do the recovery. This is why the PC windows issue those “are you sure” warnings when deleting data or emptying your recycle bins. Accidental loss or corruption of data is generally more responsive to the commercial recovery software.
There are times when you have to just suck it up when you lose data. The recovery is difficult and can be costly and it might make much more sense to just begin again. There are other times when the data is so critical that the attempt must be made. If this is the case, it is good to know that there is always hope. Unlike the things lost forever in the ashes of the burning home, the data on a hard drive has left a trail that could be used to bring it back. This is a relief to honest users and should serve as a warning to criminals.
